CPR Certification for Adoptive Parents
We have received many questions recently regarding
the new requirements pertaining to certification in Infant
CPR for adoptive parents.
The 2 year Heart Saver certification offered through
the American Heart Association is the credential required
by DCFS for domestic and international adoption.
The class, labeled "HS" on our schedule, covers procedures for adults (8 years and over), children (1 - 7), and infants (under 1) and will specifically certify you in CPR for children & infants. It is not a "general" or "generic" certification.
Please note that there is not a separate child / infant CPR class because child & adult procedures were made the same in 2005. At the end of the class, you will receive a certification stating that you are certified in:
Adult / Child CPR and choking
Infant CPR and choking
Currently, only the CPR component is required by law. First Aid is offered immediately after most CPR class if you would like to take both. First Aid is recommended but is not a requirement by DCFS at this time.
The Heart Saver class can be offered privately to individuals, couples or families if you prefer. Older siblings are welcome to participate in private classes.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the class or the requirements.
